Synopsis Relative comparison of the energy released during combustion of ethanol and kerosene. Absolute comparison is not possible with all of the heat losses to the surroundings but if the amount of water, temperature change, and distance between bottom of can and top of burner are constant then relative comparison is not unreasonable.

Prepper Supplies

  1. aluminum cans cut in half
  2. ring clamps, stir rods, thermometers, matches
  3. alcohol and kerosene burners (stored in the flammables cabinet in the prep room) and placed in a hood for the week
  4. Portable hoods for all combustions

Prepper Special Instructions: Refill burners as necessary.

Instructor Notes/Comments Students determine the enthalpy combustion in both J/g and J/mol.
